Helford River (Durgan)
Durgan is a small, unspoilt fishing hamlet on the north bank of the Helford River principally owned and managed by the National Trust. The Helford is a yachtsman's paradise, completely unspoilt with sheltered waters and there is an extensive network of footpaths connecting many of the villages along its shore.
Rose Cottages, in the middle of the village, retain the charm of a traditional Cornish fisherman's home with many of the original features maintained in their updated interiors. The cottages lend themselves perfectly to being let individually or as a group, and indeed they share a garden which has tables and chairs for the exclusive use of the cottages.
Durgan beach (a stone's throw from Rose Cottages) is safe for swimming and ideal for boating, windsurfing and sand castle building, and has a slipway.
Glendurgan Gardens (National Trust), just behind the cottages, are open to the public most days and have water gardens, a renowned maze, many interesting trees and shrubs and are highly recommended in the early spring for their stunning azaleas and rhodedendrons. Next to Glendurgan lie Trebah Gardens, a riot of colour and exotic scents in spring and early summer.
There is a foot ferry linking Durgan beach with Trebah beach, Helford Passage and Helford village, which runs from Easter to September. Additionally there is a foot ferry from the Ferry Boat Inn at Helford Passage, three quarters of a mile along the coastal path, to Helford village.
BOATS AND DINGHIES
Parking in Durgan is extremely limited, so the National Trust operates a dinghy permit system to ease access. There is a permit available for each cottage. Dinghies without a permit must be parked in the car park at the top of the village. Please let us know when booking if you require a permit.
There is one deep-water mooring available at the west end of Durgan bay to accommodate boats up to 45' long which is available to the tenants of Rose Cottages. If you would like to keep your sailing dinghy (Laser, Wayfarer etc) on the mooring, there is a charge of £30 per week, whilst for boats above 20' the charge is £60. The owners also have a small rowing boat, which is available at £50 per week. The dinghy and mooring must be reserved and paid for with your deposit at the time of booking to ensure availability.
